Primary Health Care

With Alpacas one needs the veterinary surgeon relatively rarely. Naturally the veterinary surgeon must be called in as soon as there is a suspicion that an Alpaca is not healthy. With daily observation one often already recognises possible problems by the observation of unusual behaviour. It may also be necessary to call in a veterinary surgeon for a complicated birth or to treat strongly bleeding wounds (naturally here fast veterinary assistance is necessary). A veterinary surgeon does not have to be necessarily versed with Alpacas, however, it is importantly that they provide the same standard of care as they would with any other animal. Sometimes one must "try out" several veterinary surgeons in order to find the correct one, as confidence in your veterinary surgeon is nearly just as important, as if one goes to the physician. The veterinary surgeon must inoculate the animal once annually.

In addition, the vaccine "Covexin 8", which protects against Tetanus and Coccidia should be administered. An inoculation protection against rabies is recommended but is only necessary in rabies-endangered areas. There are no special biologics for the worming of Alpacas, however, the same biologics which are used for cattle or sheep can be administered, e.g. "Ivomec", "Dectomax", "Panacur" or "Valbazen".

Some are orally given while others will need to be given via surgical injection. All medicines provided to pregnant females should be first checked before they are administered. Always check with a veterinary surgeon to ensure that the medicine is safe to administer to a pregnant and non-pregnant female. In addition, the administering of vitamin ADE is recommended, above all, this will benefit the development of the cria as the animals do not receive enough of these vitamins in their feed. The mineral material selenium is also beneficial to the animals. There are many regions which have selenium-poor soils, in which case makes the addition selenium not only a recommendation, but almost a necessity. Crias can be inoculated after the birth against paralysis ("Fohlenlaehmeimpfstoff wdt"). Additionally, one can supply it with vitamin E-Selenium; which will strengthen the cria. These are all recommendations which have been developed by breeder experience over a course of years, naturally one is free to make different decisions in individual cases.
